CAF Awards 2023: Nigeria’s Oshoala wins record-extending sixth Women’s Player of the Year award

Super Falcons forward Asisat Oshoala claims a record-extending sixth women’s Player of the Year honours at the 2023 CAF Awards.

The 29-year-old forward continues to make history as the most decorated women’s footballer in the African sphere, having now won two more awards than the nearest person to her, former Nigerian forward Perpetua Nkwocha.

Oshoala overcame intense competition from Zambia’s Barbra Banda and Thembi Kgatlana of South Africa to claim the accolade, which has somewhat become synonymous with her name.

She enjoyed immense success last campaign with her club side, Barcelona Femeni, winning the treble, including the league and UEFA Women’s Champions League titles.

Oshoala led the line for Nigeria at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, where she became the first African footballer to score at three different Women’s World Cup tournaments when she netted the side’s winner in their 3-2 comeback win over Australia. The goal also made her the country’s joint-highest scorer at the tournament with three goals

She claims Nigeria’s second individual honour at this year’s CAF Awards and the country’s third accolade after the Super Falcons won the women’s National Team of the Year Award.
