The Confederation of African Football (CAF) on Monday, announced the date for the eighth edition of the African Nations Championships (CHAN).
CAF 4th Vice President, Seidou Mbombo Njoya, who serves as the Chairperson of the CHAN organising committee, revealed that the tournament will be held from February 1-28, 2025, in the East African nations of Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.
Njoya made the announcement during the press conference after the CAF Executive Committee meeting at the Kempinski Hotel in Nairobi. He also announced that the CHAN qualifiers for the 19-team tournament will take place between October 25 and December 2024.
CHAN, which is a biennial football competition, is restricted to home-based players, with the teams consisting of only players playing in their national league competitions.
This will mark the first time East Africa hosts a continental football competition for national teams and will lay down a marker for the three nations that will also host the 2027 African Cup of Nations.
CAF President, Dr. Patrice Motsepe, toured three Kenyan national stadiums, which are expected to host the event, with two currently under renovation
He said: “I’m impressed with the commitment shown by the three countries which gives each of them the opportunity to enhance their football infrastructure and attract thousands of visitors and boost their tourism.”
Senegal emerged champions in the last edition in 2023 after they beat hosts Algeria 5-4 on penalties in the final.
Meanwhile, Morocco and DR Congo have each won the CHAN title twice since its inception in 2009.
