Victor Boniface came off the bench to score the winner as Bayer Leverkusen edged out 10-man Wolfsburg in a 4-3 Bundesliga win at the BayArena on Sunday, Afrosport reports.
Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso made five chances to the team that started against Feyenoord in the UEFA Champions League during the week.
The reigning Bundesliga champions however started on the back foot as Nordi Mukiele scored an own goal after five minutes.
German midfielder, Florian Wirtz put his team level in the 14th minute, scoring a powerful shot into the bottom left corner of net with the assist coming from the experienced Granit Xhaka.
Leverkusen took the lead for the first time in the match after a cross from Alejandro Grimaldo landed perfectly were German defender, Jonathan Tah who planted a header from a corner kick just beyond the Wolfsburg goalkeeper’s reach.
It was Die Wolfe’s turn to convert from a set piece in the 37th minute as Belgian defender, Sebastian Bornauw doubled his tally for the season with a very close range header from the Jakub Kaminski’s cross from a corner kick.
The first half was not going to end as a draw as Wolfsburg took the lead in the final minute of the half after their efforts were rewarded with Mattias Svanberg taking a page from Wirtz’s book with a powerful shot from outside the box into the bottom right corner giving his team the lead just before the break.
It was not long after the second half began that Leverkusen scored another goal following a corner-kick situation. This time Alex Garcia’s cross into the box found Piero Hincapie who planted a close range header into the top left corner of the post.
Things got heated as the game came to a close as Yannick Gerhardt got a straight red card because of violent conduct in the 88th minute.

Boniface, who came on for Patrik Schick, had the last say in the game as he converted from close range in the 93rd minute to seal the game for Xabi Alonso’s team to complete yet another epic comeback.
