Bundesliga: Boniface scores brace again in Bayer Leverkusen win

Nigeria striker Victor Boniface continued his goalscoring run in the German Bundesliga with two goals in Bayer Leverkusen’s 5-1 triumph over Darmstadt.

Boniface made his third appearance in the German top-flight on Saturday since his permanent switch from Union Saint-Gilloise in July.

After scoring a brace in last weekend’s 3-0 defeat of Borussia Monchengladbach, the 22-year-old opened the scoring for Xabi Alonso’s team at the BayArena after linking up with Jeremie Frimpong in the 21st minute.

The Nigerian star grabbed his second goal, just a minute after the hour-mark to make it 3-1 and he also provided an assist for Bayer Leverkusen’s fourth goal to help Jonas Hofmann get on the scoresheet.

Boniface played from the start to finish as Leverkusen climbed to the Bundesliga summit, level on nine points with Bayern Munich and with a superior goal difference.

With his contribution of four goals and two assists in his first three games, Boniface joins former Borussia Dortmund stars Paco Alcacer (seven goals contribution in 2018) and Erling Haaland (seven goals contribution in 2020) in the hallowed rank of players who have made better start to the Bundesliga career.

After the international break, Boniface and his Bayer Leverkusen teammates will hope to extend the winning  start when they travel to Allianz Arena to face Bayern Munich on September 15.
