Brussels Diamond League: Tebogo, Fahnbulleh & other Africans vie for medals in final

Paris 2024: Tebogo, Fahnbulleh & two others to represent Africa in men’s 200m final

Olympic 200-metre champion, Letsile Tebogo, is aiming for another triumph on the tracks, this time at the Wanda Diamond League Final in Brussels on Saturday, September 14.

The Botswana sprinter has been in top form of late securing victories in Lausanne, Silesia, Zurich, and Brescia, as well as a 100m win in Rome.

The 21-year-old has seemingly switched his attention to Brussels, where he will face stiff competition from top athletes including Olympic silver medallist Kenny Bednarek, world silver medallist Erriyon Knighton, 2022 world 100m champion Fred Kerley, and Joseph Fahnbulleh of Liberia, who is the only other African in the race.

“It’s two Africans against the rest of the world,” maintained Tebogo said. “I believe it’s going to be a good race!

“It’s a good thing to end the season with that winning streak, with that Olympic gold and Diamond League trophy.”

The Motswana also added that he feels energised and hinted that Yohan Blake’s stadium record of 19.26s in Brussels could be in danger.

“Looking at what I did in Zurich, no one thought that 19.5s was possible looking at the weather conditions,” he said.

“I believe looking at the competition also, the stadium record is possible, but I don’t want to put myself under that pressure of chasing that stadium record.

“If it comes, then it comes. All I can say is I feel fresh after all the runs I’ve been through and feel more energised than anything else.”

Elsewhere, the women’s 100m hurdles event also promises to be pulsating with several big stars headlining the event.

Two-time world champion Danielle Williams, Olympic silver medalist Cyrena Samba-Mayelaenters, and bronze medallist Jasmine Camacho-Quinn will face off again, along with Jamaica’s world leader Ackera Nugent.

In the women’s 200m, Ivory Coast’s Marie Josee Ta Lou-Smith will fancy her chances as she comes up against familiar foes in Olympic bronze medallist, Britanny Brown, world 100m champion Sha’Carri Richardson, and Britain’s Daryll Neita.

Meanwhile, on a pre-programmed invitational scheduled for Saturday evening, African champion Gina Bass Bittaye will compete against Olympic 400m hurdles champion Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone in the 200m.
