Brooklyn Nets part ways with head coach Jacque Vaughn

The Brooklyn Nets of the National Basketball Association (NBA) have fired head coach Jacque Vaughn after less than two seasons, the franchise announced on Monday.

The 49-year-old’s eight-year association with the Nets finally comes to an end having previously held the positions of assistant coach, interim coach and most recently head coach.

The team added that an interim coach will be named “in the near future.”

Vaughn, who signed a multi-year contract extension with the Nets in February 2023, was an assitant coach with Brooklyn from 2016-2020. In 2020, he was named interim head coach, and he led them to a 7-3 record.

The former Utah Jazz point guard was named as assistant to Hall of Famer Steve Nash from 2020-2022 before being named as the team’s interim head coach omce more in November 2022 after they parted ways with Nash.

Vaughn’s sacking coincides with Brooklyn’s disappointing form this season, as they are currently 11th in the Eastern Conference with a 21-33 losing record. During his time as head coach of the Nets, he led them to a 71-68 record having never coached a full season with the team.

The Nets lost five of their last six games heading into the All-Star weekend and they will return to action with four road games lined up, starting with a trip to Toronto to take on the Raptors on Thursday.
