Besiktas suspend Aboubakar, Ghezzal, Bailly & Onana over poor performance

Turkish Super Lig club Besiktas have suspended four African players from their first-team due to poor performance and incompatibility within the squad. 

The suspended quartet are Cameroon striker Vincent Aboubakar, Ivory Coast centre-back Eric Bailly, Algeria midfielder Rachid Ghezzal and Cameroon’s Jean Onana. 

The suspension notice was announced by the club’s director of football operations on Monday after the Black Eagles suffered a 3-1 loss to league leaders Fenerbahce on Saturday. 

Besiktas’ announcement read: “According to a statement from the Director of Football Operations for Beşiktaş Mr. Samet Aybaba, players Vincent Aboubakar, Valentin Rosier, Eric Bailly, Rachid Ghezzal and Jean Onana have been suspended from the squad due to poor performance and incompatibility within the team until further notice.”

Besiktas are currently fifth in the Turkish Super Lig table and Aboubakar is their leading top scorer with four goals in 12 league appearances.

31-year-old Ghezzal has played in 10 Super Lig matches this campaign and he has a goal to his name while Onana and Bailly have made four and five league appearances respectively.

Besiktas are already eliminated from the UEFA Conference League as they sit bottom of Group D with just a point after five matches.

They will wrap up group proceedings in an inconsequential fixture against third-placed Lugano are also out of the competition.
