FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem says he has no problem if Carlos Sainz Sr. runs against him in the upcoming elections in December, Afrosport reports.
Sainz Sr is reportedly considering running for the FIA president role after more than 40 years as a rally driver.
The Spaniard, who is the father of Williams Formula 1 driver of the same name, is the only person to show interest in running against Ben Sulayem, who has been FIA president since taking over from Jean Todt in 2021.
When asked how he feels about Sainz potentially running against him, the Emirati said: “Let him stand. That is democracy.”
Ben Sulayem has confirmed he will stand for a second four-year term at the FIA from 2025 to 2029.
He also said he was satisfied with what he has achieved at the FIA and wants to build on the work he started since 2021.
The former rally driver has come under scrutiny for changes within the FIA which has called into question his leadership.
He however does not care about the negativity, and is not bothered if he is doing something irritating to his detractors.
