Taiwo Awoniyi scored once again but he was on the losing side as Nottingham Forest fell from two goals up against Manchester United to lose 3-2 in Saturday’s Premier League encounter on Saturday afternoon.
The Nigeria international has been in top form, scoring in Forest’s first two games against Arsenal and Sheffield United. He gave his team the lead at Old Trafford in just the second minute via a swift counter attack from a United corner kick that left him free of any serious challenge and easily beat Cameroon’s Andre Onana in goal.
It was the seventh consecutive Premier League game Awoniyi scored, putting him level with Egypt forward Mohamed Salah and retired Togo forward Emmanuel Adebayor as the African players to have achieved such a feat in the English top flight. It was also Awoniyi’s ninth goal in that run.
7 – Taiwo Awoniyi has scored in each of his last seven Premier League appearances for Nottingham Forest, a record run by a Forest player. Forest added a second goal courtesy of Ivory Coast defender Wily Boly two minutes later but United responded back with goals from Christian Eriksen in the 17th minute before completing the comeback in the second half thanks to Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes (penalty). Forest were also reduced to 10 men after Joe Worrall was given a straight red card.
For Awoniyi, he will be looking to become the outright African to score in most consecutive Premier League games when Forest visit Chelsea next Saturday. Before that is an EFL Cup second round tie with Burnley on Wednesday.
