Awoniyi earns Nottingham Forest first Premier League away win

Morocco’s En-Nesyri scores hat-trick in Sevilla’s Copa del Rey win

Taiwo Awoniyi scored the only goal as Nottingham Forest saw off  Southampton 1-0 at St Mary’s to record their long-awaited first away win of the season in their Premier League return.

The East Midlands side before now had gone eight games without a win on the road, losing six and drawing the other two.

All that changed on Wednesday night thanks to Awoniyi who connected with Brenan Johnson’s square pass in the 27th minute and tucked the ball in with consummate ease.

Awoniyi has now taken his Premier League tally for the season to four goals, two scored at the City Ground while the other one was on the road in a 3-2 defeat by Fulham. All four goals by the Nigeria international have also been openers which is just one more than Manchester City’s Erling Haaland and his tally of five opening goals, the most in the top flight this season.

Wednesday’s victory is a big boost for Steve Cooper’s newly-promoted team as it sees them out of the relegation zone and up to 15th position.

They will next turn their attention to the FA Cup where they tackle Championship side Blackpool in the third round at Bloomfield Road on Saturday.
