Former Nigeria international Augustine Eguavoen has stepped down from his role as the interim coach of the Super Eagles, Afrosport reports.
The 59-year-old, who is the Nigeria Football Federation’s (NFF) Technical Director, was appointed to lead the Eagles in their opening two qualifying matches for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations against Benin Republic and Rwanda, respectively.
After talks broke down with German manager Bruno Labbadia over tax-related issues, Eguavoen stepped in to lead the Eagles to their opening games, which he has now fulfilled.
“I have been given a mandate to handle two games. I am very pleased with the boys, and thanks to the NFF. It ends today – the two games mandate.” he said.
Eguavoen, who was back in his fourth stint with the Super Eagles, led them to a 3-0 thumping of Benin’s Cheetahs in their opening Group D game on Saturday, September 7.
The former defender was also on the sidelines on Tuesday as Nigeria were held to a frustrating goalless draw against Rwanda at the Amahoro Stadium in Kigali on Tuesday.
Eguavoen’s short tie with the team has subsequently helped get the groove back as they currently sit atop the group standings with four points from two games.
The NFF search for a permanent Super Eagles manager continues with a double-header against Libya up next in the AFCON 2025 Qualifiers in October.
