Arsenal women’s forward Vivianne Miedema is set to undergo surgery after rupturing her anterior cruciate ligament.
The Netherlands international would have her surgery in the coming days and is expected to be out for “an extended period of time”.
The 26-year-old striker was taken off on a stretcher after suffering the devastating injury during the Gunners’ 1-0 defeat to Lyon in the UEFA Women’s Champions League last Thursday.
She will join teammate Beth Mead on the sidelines after the World Cup-winning midfielder suffered the same fate in a Women’s Super League match against Manchester United women.
Miedema via her social media platform expressed her sadness at the news while thanking the fans for the well-meaning messages.
Arsenal women top their UEFA Women’s Champions League group with ten points from five games and they are second in the English Women’s Super League table.
