Arokodare eager to score more Premier League goals after breaking Wolves duck

AFCON 2025: Liverpool coach Slot rues Salah’s absence ahead of tournament

Tolu Arokodare hopes to score more goals for Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League after netting his first top flight goal in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat away at Arsenal, Afrosport reports.

The 25-year-old, who scored his first competitive goal in a 2-0 win over Everton in the EFL Cup third round in September, came off the bench for Jorgen Strand Larsen and equalised in the 90th minute.

However, Wolves’ hope of getting a point at the Emirates Stadium were dashed after Yerson Mosquera put the ball into his own net in the 94th minute.

Reacting on scoring his goal, Arokodare said: “We obviously have to score more. We haven’t scored a lot of goals in the last few games, and it’s something we’ve been working on.

“We did have a couple of chances in the second half, and we have that quality of scoring goals, but we haven’t been lucky, attacking or defending, and hopefully in the coming games we’ll score more goals, and everything will change.”

The defeat was the ninth in a row for Wolves this season. It sees them still rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table, still in search of their first win of the season and leaving Arokodare disappointed.

“It’s hurtful. It’s been happening to us the whole season,” he added.

“We played the whole 90 minutes very well, and at the end we always concede. I don’t know how to explain it, but it’s just very hurtful.

“It’s been happening to us the whole of the season. It’s not the first time we’ve conceded in the last minute, and I think it’s something we have to work on, staying focused until the to the last whistle. It’s very unlucky for us, a good goal from them, and I would say a little bit of poor defending from us.”

Despite the defeat, Arokodare, who joined Wolves from Genk in the summer, took some positives.

“Of course, there are a lot of positive things to take. We played against the best team in the league, they’re top of the table, and their first goal was from a corner kick – very lucky. We came back, and they also scored a last-minute goal,” he stated.

“There are a lot of positives to take from this game. We focus on the good and not the bad. We go to play against Brentford, and hopefully we get the win.”

Arokodare was left out of the final Nigeria squad list for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, and will hope to get on the score sheet again when Wolves host Brentford at the Molineux on Saturday.
