The 27-year-old, who recently sealed a move to Dutch powerhouse Ajax Amsterdam this summer, enjoyed fine form in the second division last season with Middlesbrough.
Akpom scored 29 goals for Boro in all competitions last season, including 28 in the league, which won him the Golden Boot as the division’s top scorer.
The former Arsenal and Hull City forward was also voted into the PFA team of the year alongside Anglo-Nigeria Nathan Tella, who spent last season on loan at league winners Burnley and recently secured a permanent move to Bayer Leverkusen from Southampton, and Chelsea young defender Ian Maatsen.

Akpom won a variety of honors in the 2022–23 campaign, which included Middlesbrough’s player and players’ player of the season award, the EFL Championship Player of the season award, and being included in the Championship team of the season.
The Nigerian’s win at the Lowry Theatre in Manchester, England, on Monday capped what was arguably his best ever season as a professional, helping Boro finish fourth on the league table after a torrid start, and just missing out on promotion to the Premier League following a defeat in the playoffs.
