Akpom wins Championship Player of the Month award

Akpom leads Championship scorer’s chart in Middlesbrough victory

Nigeria’s Chuba Akpom has been voted Championship Player of the Month for December.

The Middlesbrough striker has been in fine form since the appointment of former Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick as manager of the team.

Akpom scored four goals in as many games in the month of December, including a famous hat-trick in the home game against Wigan Athletic at the Riverside Stadium.

The 27-year-old saw off competition from Sheffield United’s Senegalese midfielder Iliman Ndiaye, West Bromwich Albion’s Alex Palmer, and Swansea City’s Joel Piroe to win the award.

Middlesbrough manager Carrick said he is delighted for Akpom, and the recognition shows the team as a whole is doing well.

He said: “I’m delighted for Chuba. He’s been playing really well and I’m sure he’d be the first to acknowledge the role of his team-mates in laying the foundations. Individual awards are always good because overall it means you are doing well as a team.”

Akpom continues to rack up awards after being named PFA Player of the Month in November – an honour he was nominated for in December too.

He leads the Championship’s scorers’ chart with 13 goals and an assist this season.

Middlesbrough are currently fifth in the league standings, and they are unbeaten in their last three league games, scoring nine times and conceding just three.

Akpom will look to add to his season’s tally when Boro take on Millwall for a Championship fixture on Saturday.
