Akanji to miss Liverpool, Real Madrid ties for Man City

Manuel Akanji is set to miss Manchester City’s Uefa Champions League knockout phase playoff second leg with Real Madrid and the Premier League match with leaders Liverpool due to a muscular issue, Afrosport reports.

The Swiss centre-back of Nigerian heritage was taken off at the break in the 3-2 defeat by Madrid at Etihad Stadium on Tuesday, and was replaced by Rico Lewis.

City will face Real at the Santiago Bernabeu next Wednesday before hosting Liverpool at the Etihad on Sunday.

Manager Pep Guardiola has had to deal with injuries to his back line all season with John Stones, Nathan Ake and Ruben Dias all just returning from the sidelines.

New signing and midfielder Nico Gonzalez also suffered an injury on his debut against Leyton Orient in the FA Cup fourth round last week.

Influential midfielder Rodri remains sidelined for the rest of the season after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

The Citizens are currently fifth in the Premier League standings, two points away from the top four and 16 points behind leaders Liverpool.
