African Warriors Fighting Championship: From Nigeria with Dambe

Combat sports has evolved over the years with the Ultimate Fight Championship (UFC), the Extreme Fighting Championship (EFC) and other mixed martial arts captivating people and gaining more popularity.

Now, it is time for the African Warriors Fighting Championship (AWFC) to take centre stage.

With an accumulated 35 million views on AWFC’s YouTube page so far, the rave surrounding the combat sport in Northern Nigeria is not slowing down.

The AWFC is the leading promoter of indigenous African combat sports; Dambe and Wrestling, and their mission is to offer career opportunities to African athletes to take the continent’s ancient fighting traditions global.

The initiative caught the attention of renowned UFC champion, Kamaru Usman who visited a Dambe camp in Nassarawa, a state in the North Central region of Nigeria to witness the Dogon Aleka vs Shagon Inga fight in November 2021.

In an Afrosport interview, the Chief Executive Officer of AWFC, Maxwell Kalu gave insights into the combat sports innovation.

Kalu said: “Our lead sport is Dambe – a traditional boxing native to the North [of Nigeria]. We have affiliate camps where we source fighters from. We get the best champions from the communities and villages.”

From being a tradition for men to get ready for war, Dambe has morphed into a full-fledged sport.

Afrosport TV, the first continental Free-to-Air (FTA) sports channel in Africa and sub-Sahara Africa’s first 24-hour free continent-wide sports channel, is set to broadcast all AWFC fights, starting on Friday, September 30th.
