African stars Wissa and Mbeumo deliver blow to Liverpool’s Premier League ambitions

DR Congo’s Yoanne Wissa and Cameroon’s Bryan Mbeumo were on target for Brentford as they dampened Liverpool’s Premier League chances on Monday evening.

The Bees saw off Jurgen Kloop’s side in a historic 3-1 victory at the Gtech Community Stadium in West London.

The two African internationals were in inspiring form as Mbeumo almost put Brentford in front early on but a great save from Brazilian shotstopper Alisson at the bottom-left corner saw it result into a corner.

The West London club however took the lead from the resulting Mbeumo corner in the 19th minute, when French defender Ibrahima Konate turned the ball into his own goal after pressure from opposing defender Ben Mee.

The Bees thought they had a second eight minutes later but Wissa was deemed offside by referee Stuart Attwell.

Wissa and Mbeumo combined again in the 40th minute as the latter’s corner from the right was struck on a half volley by the DR Congo forward. However, the video assistant referee ruled it out after the ball had hit Mee standing in an offside position.

The 26-year-old Congolese was not going to be denied a third time when he sent a glancing header past Alisson from a Mathias Jense cross 13 seconds after his second disallowed goal. VAR confirmed it had gone over the line and the striker got his second goal in three games against the Reds and his fourth of the Premier League season.

Although Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain got one back for the visitors, Mbeumo put the tie to bed in the 84th minute, bullying Konate from a Christian Norgaard overhead pass before calmly slotting it past the goalkeeper for his 4th of the Premier League, tying his tally from the whole of last season after just eighteen games.

The victory was Brentford’s first over Liverpool since November 1938 and it marked their sixth straight game unbeaten.

They moved to 7th on the table with 26 points from 18 games and will face struggling Bournemouth next in the league on January 14.
