The maiden edition of the Africa Youth Scrabble Championship (AYSC) will begin with a trophy tour across the continent from the May 2 to May 31.
The trophy tour will take place in 12 African countries including hosts Nigeria, Cameroon, Sierra Leone, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia and Uganda with the aim of familiarising students and scrabble enthusiasts with the competition.
The nickel-plated Africa Youth Scrabble Trophy is named after Winifred Awosika and it was made by the reputable UK-based Swatkins Group.
The President of Pan Africa Scrabble Association (PANASA), Adekoyejo Adegbesan describes the trophy tour as a new strategy to activate interest in scrabble across Africa.
“This s a fresh strategy at creating a real feel and inspiration to many African children and young adults. The AYSC Trophy Tour is also meant to activate the interest and spread awareness at the grassroots on the prospects and possibilities they can achieve as scrabble players,”Adegbesan said.
The Africa Youth Scrabble Championship is scheduled to run alongside the President’s Cup from August 24 to 28 in Lagos.
Registered participants will feature in the U-15 and U-19 categories of events, and Botswana are the first country to complete registration for the tournament.
