AFCON: Cameroon defeat South Africa to book quarterfinal with Morocco

Cameroon defeated South Africa 2-1 to set up a quarter-final meeting with 2025 Africa Cup of Nations hosts Morocco, Afrosport reports.

The round of 16 match in Rabat began with a rapid and intense pace as South Africa and Cameroon exchanged early advantages. Both teams explored their options, with set pieces and direct play characterising the initial moments.

The first goal came in the 41st minute when Junior Tchamadeu took advantage of a well-executed play to outmanoeuvre the South African defense, giving Cameroon a well-deserved lead as they headed into halftime. South Africa attempted to equalise before the break, including a saved shot from Oswin Appollis, but they were unable to find the finishing touch.

The second half began perfectly for Cameroon. At the 54-minute mark, Christian Kofane scored to extend the lead to 2-0, placing immediate pressure on South Africa and granting the Lions full control of the game. With their lead established, Cameroon skillfully managed the pace of the game, closing down spaces and looking to take advantage of counter-attacking opportunities.

Just when it appeared the match was decided, South Africa discovered a late opportunity. In the 88th minute, Evidence Maggopa seized the space inside the box to connect with a long pass from Aubrey Modiba, scoring to bring the game to 2-1 and creating significant tension in the final moments.

Camerroon held for the win and will now face Morocco in the last eight at Stade Prince Moulay Abdallah in Rabat on Friday.
