AFCON 2025: Senegal star Mane wins player of the tournament

Senegal’s Sadio Mane was named Player of the Tournament at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations awards ceremony following the Teranga Lions’ dramatic victory,  Afrosport reports.

Mane, a pivotal figure in Senegal’s squad, showcased exceptional leadership and influence throughout the competition, contributing significantly as his team secured the trophy.

His presence ensured the final against Morocco continued amidst controversy, solidifying his recognition as the tournament’s standout player.

The awards panel highlighted his impactful performances — through goals, assists, and overall leadership — as key to Senegal’s triumph.

Morocco’s Brahim Diaz emerged as the tournament’s top scorer with five goals. The Real Madrid forward had a chance to add a sixth in the final but his attempt at a Panenka penalty was thwarted by Senegal’s goalkeeper, Edouard Mendy. That missed opportunity proved crucial, altering the momentum of the match in Senegal’s favor.

Yassine Bounou of Morocco earned the Golden Glove for his outstanding goalkeeping displays, which included multiple clean sheets and critical saves throughout the tournament.

Despite their final loss, Morocco received the Fair Play award for their sportsmanship and discipline during the competition.
