AFCON 2025 Qualifiers: Which eight teams are through to next year’s finals in Morocco?

AFCON 2025 Qualifiers: Sudan secures narrow victory over Niger; Rwanda hold Libya

With the conclusion of matchday four encounters in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, more teams have secured tickets to the continental showpiece scheduled to be held in Morocco in 2025.

At the moment, eight nations have booked their place in the tournament, with Egypt, Senegal, Angola, DR Congo, Algeria, Cameroon, and Burkina Faso joining hosts Morocco with two games to spare in the qualifying rounds.

Afrosport highlights these teams and takes you through how they have fared in the qualifiers so far.

 

Senegal

The Teranga Lions needed a 96th minute winner from talisman Sadio Mane on Tuesday to beat Malawi 1-0 and secure passage.

The 2021 AFCON winners are currently in second place in Group L with ten points, same as leaders Burkina Faso, who have a better goal difference. With three wins and one draw, Senegal, has yet to lose any games in the qualifiers so far, with games against the Burkinabes and Burundi to come.

Burkina Faso

Group L leaders, Burkina Faso, have also secured passage to next year’s tournament after securing victories in this month’s double-header against Burundi.

With matches against Senegal and Malawi yet to come, the Stallions are assured of a place in Morocco, as they are only engulfed in a fight for the group winner.

Angola

Angola’s Palancras Negras, who are still unbeaten in the qualification series have also qualified for AFCON 2025 having clinched a 1-0 away win at Niger Republic on Tuesday.

The Central Africans, who are top of Group F with 12 points, have won all four of their matches in the series so far with encounters against Ghana and Sudan next on the cards.

DR Congo

Group H leaders, Democratic Republic of Congo, have as well done enough to ensure their country’s flag will be hoisted when Morocco welcome the whole of Africa in 2025.

The Leopards defeated Tanzania over two legs this month to confirm their spot in the AFCON. The Sébastien Desabre-led side still have matches Guinea and Ethiopia to come.

Algeria

Algeria, another team on 12 points from their first four matches, are also guaranteed a spot in Morocco.

The Desert Foxes have taken care of all their obstacles in the qualifiers so far, including securing a 1-0 win over Togo on Monday. They, however, still have Equatorial Guinea and Liberia yet, in what seems to be formalities.

Cameroon

The Indomitable Lions have done enough in the qualifiers to ensure they will be present in Morocco to earn their 22nd outing at the AFCON.

Cameroon are Group J leaders with 10 points after securing three wins and a draw. They still have two games against Nairobi and Zimbabwe to come.

Egypt

Record AFCON winners, Egypt, are also through with two games left in the series. Despite missing talisman Mohamed Salah, the Pharaohs recorded a 1-0 win against Mauritania to qualify for the continental engagement where they will be gunning for their eighth AFCON title.

The Seven-time AFCON champions are currently atop Group C with 12 points having navigated their way through all the other teams in the group.

Morocco

Albeit having the privilege of being hosts, Morocco, Group B leaders have been spotless in the qualification rounds so far with four wins from as many games.

The Atlas Lions, one of Africa’s star-studded teams and semifinalists at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, will be looking to clinch their second title in the continental showpiece.
