AFCON 2025 Qualifiers: Super Eagles winger Simon backs interim coach Eguavoen

Super Eagles winger Moses Simon has expressed confidence in the leadership of Super Eagles interim coach, Augustine Eguavoen, ahead of their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Benin Republic and Rwanda.

The Nantes forward, who is in great form having scored in back-to-back games in the French Ligue 1 after returning from a lengthy injury, says Eguavoen, who is no stranger to the national team setup, has the experience to lead the team to success.

The 29-year-old also expressed his delight at being called up to play in the AFCON Qualifiers. He said: “I miss the boys, the team,” he said following his return to the squad.

“The mood is a little bit up in Eagles camp and we are delighted to have coach [Austin] Eguavoen with us. He already knows some of the players, he knows the role they will have to play. He gives confidence mostly to the players,” Simon added.

The Super Eagles will kick start their AFCON qualifiers campaign against the Cheetahs of Benin, who they shockingly lost 2-1 to the last time they both met in June in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Simon, who will be gunning for a starting spot, expressed the team’s determination to avenge their previous loss to Benin as he noted the importance of winning their first qualifying game against the Gernot Rohr-led side.

“We are focused on winning to bring back the smiles to the faces of Nigerians who have been disappointed with the team following our unimpressive runs in the 2026 FIFA World Cp qualifying campaign,” he said.

The three-time African champions will battle Benin on Saturday in Uyo, before they fly to Kigali to take on Rwanda on Tuesday.
