AFCON 2025 Qualifiers: Patrick Mabedi fired as Malawi coach with immediate effect

Malawi Football Association (FAM) on Wednesday announced the sacking of Patrick Mabedi as head coach of its men’s national team, Afrosport reports.

Mabedi was appointed as head coach of Malawi’s Flames last October having signed a two-year contract. However, the 50-year-old’s tenure comes to an end with immediate effect.

According to a statement from FAM, the body decided to terminate Mabedi’s contract based on recommendations from the Technical Committee during an emergency meeting held on October 28.

“Football Association of Malawi (FAM) wishes to inform all its stakeholders and the public that it has terminated the contract of the Malawi Senior Men’s National football team Coach Patrick Mabedi with immediate effect,” the press release read.

“This is in line with resolutions of the FAM Emergency Committee held on 28th October 2024. The decision is based on the recommendations from the Technical Committee following the dismal performance of the Flames and subsequent failure to qualify for the Total Energies AFCON 2025.

“Football Association of Malawi is grateful for the contribution made by Coach Mabedi during the time he served as Flames’ Coach and wishes the tactician all the best in his future endeavors.”

This development follows Malawi’s poor run of form as the East African nation have failed to qualifier for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco having failed to pick up any point in Group L.

The Flames are bottom of the group with no points after four matches, and will be in action in the final round of matches in the AFCON 2025 qualifiers next month.

They will take on Burundi in matchday five on November 14, before hosting current group leaders Burkina Faso at the Bingu National Stadium four days later.
