AFCON 2025 Qualifiers: Super Eagles on path to failure without kicking a ball

Newly-appointed Nigeria head coach, Bruno Labbadia has invited 23 players for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Benin Republic and Rwanda in September.

Labbadia has wasted no time to hit the ground running after his confirmation as Finidi George’s successor on Tuesday.

Current African Footballer of the Year, Victor Osimhen, Atalanta’s UEFA Europa League final hero Ademola Lookman, Fulham midfielder Alex Iwobi, and Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface were included in the list that was released on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, captain William Troost-Ekong makes a return to the Super Eagles after missing the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in June due to injury.

Other players invited include versatile defender, Ola Aina, Sevilla’s Kelechi Iheanacho, Taiwo Awoniyi, Wilfred Ndidi, Samuel Chukwueze, and Chippa United goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.

Goalkeeper Amas Obasogie who plays for Bendel Insurance in the Nigeria Premier Football League is the only new face in the 23-man squad.

The Super Eagles camp is expected to open on September 1 in Uyp, Akwa Ibom state as they begin preparations to host Benin at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium on September 7 before travelling to Kigali to face Rwanda, three days later.
