The Super Eagles are currently sweating on the fitness of leading forward Victor Osimhen after his Turkish club Galatasaray released an update on the injury he picked up last Saturday.
The 25-year-old, who opened his club account with a brace in their 3-3 draw against Kasimpasa in the Super Lig, was replaced by former Napoli teammate, Dries Mertens, before the second half restart.
Although Osimhen downplayed any worries of a serious injury after the game, adding that it was just a precautionary move, Galatasaray’s injury update released on Tuesday says otherwise.
A statement on the club website read: “The treatment of our football player Victor Osimhen, who felt pain in his upper left posterior muscle during the Kasımpaşa match in the seventh week of the Trendyol Super League and who was diagnosed with strain (strain and bleeding) in his upper left posterior muscle group during his check-ups at our sponsor hospital Medicana today, has been started.”
With Super Eagles interim coach Augustine Eguavoen expected to announce his squad of invited players for this month’s double header against the Mediterranean Knights of Libya in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, Osimhen is now running against time to prove his fitness for the crucial encounters.
The Napoli loanee scored once in two appearances last time out in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers, as he came off the bench to double Nigeria’s lead in a 3-0 win over Benin Republic in Uyo.
