AFCON 2025 Qualifiers: CAF President Motsepe denounces Libya’s treatment of Super Eagles

Patrice Motsepe, President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), has assured that appropriate action will be taken regarding the incident that transpired between Libya and Nigeria’s Super Eagles this month.

The Super Eagles were allegedly mistreated in Libya after their airplane was suspiciously diverted to the Al-Abraq Airport shortly before landing in Benghazi for the second leg of their double-header in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Nigerian players and officials were held at the Al Abraq Airport for several hours as they were reportedly denied access to food, water, and internet.

However, during CAF 46th Ordinary General Assembly in Addia Ababa on Tuesday, Motsepe denounced the treatment of the Nigerian national team and its staff, and assured that the matter is being looked into by the appropriate body.

“CAF is actively tackling this issue,” stated Motsepe, who particularly highlighted the body’s commitment to fairness.

“While investigations are ongoing, I want to assure you that such disrespectful treatment towards visiting teams will not be tolerated.

“I want to emphasise a principle that we will not tolerate. This is something that has been going on for quite some time.

“Forget about the Libya vs Nigeria situation; forget about that; appropriate action will be taken. I have heard too many stories about a football club or national team that goes to a country,” Motsepe assured.

Nigeria currently leads Group D of the qualifiers with seven points, one point more than second-placed Benin.

Meanwhile, Libya are bottom of the group with just one point, and Rwanda are in third place with five points.
