AFCON 2025 Qualifiers: CAF appoints Senegal’s Sy as referee for Benin, Nigeria match

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has appointed Senegalese official Issa Sy as the referee for the matchday five encounter between Benin Republic and Nigeria’s Super Eagles in next month’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers.

The Cheetahs of Benin will host the Super Eagles at the Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny in Abidjan in a reply to their 2026 World Cup qualifier match in June.

Sy, 40, will be joined by compatriots Djibril Camara, Nouha Bangoura, and El Hadji Amadou Sy, who will serve as assistant referee 1, assistant referee 2, and fourth official, respectively.

Meanwhile, Rene Williams Sere from Ivory Coast has been selected as match commissioner, while Angolan Inacio Manuel Candido will be referee assessor.

Nigeria head into the game in Abidjan as Group D leaders with 10 points and a plus-seven goal difference after CAF’s Disciplinary Board ruled in favour of the three-time African champions in their rift with Libya.

The Cheetahs and the Super Eagles will lock horns on Thursday, November 14, with the match scheduled to kick off at 7pm local time (8pm Nigeria Time).

Meanwhile, they will host Rwanda at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo at 5pm on Monday, November 18, with Morocco’s Samir Guezzaz appointed as referee.

Guezzaz’s compatriots Zakaria Brinsi, Abdessamad Abertoune and Kech Chaf Mustapha will serve as assistant referee 1, assistant referee 2 and fourth official, respectively, while Ghanaian Prosper Harrison Addo will be the commissioner, and Ali Mohamed Ahmed from Somalia will be the referee assessor.
