AFCON 2025 Qualifiers: Benin defender Tijani ruled out of Super Eagles tie with injury

Benin Republic defender Mohamed Tijani will play no part in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Nigeria on Saturday, September 7.

The Switzerland-based defender Tijani, who plays for Yverdon-Sport, reportedly picked up an ankle injury in training this week.

The 27-year-old was one of Benin’s best performers in their last encounter against the Super Eagles in Abidjan, when the Cheetahs recorded a famous 2-1 win against their West African neighbours.

Tijani is expected to travel to Nigeria on Thursday with the rest of his teammates and staff, when they head for Uyo, Akwa Ibom, the venue for the match.

The defender is battling a race against time to be fit for their second qualifying match against Libya’s Mediterranean Knights on Tuesday, September 10.

The Cheetahs, drawn in Group D, are due to face the Super Eagles on Saturday, September 7, at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, before hosting Libya at the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny three days later.
