AFCON 2025 Qualifiers: Gernot Rohr names 25-man squad for Nigeria & Libya matches

Head coach of the Benin Republic, Gernot Rohr, has called upon 25 players for their upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Nigeria’s Super Eagles and Libya.

The 71-year-old German coached the Eagles over a five-year period, and he will be looking to register another victory over Nigeria to make it back-to-back wins after their triumph in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in June.

Rohr has invited three goalkeepers, nine defenders, eight midfielders, and five forwards for the upcoming AFCON qualification matches, including team captain Steve Mounie and Jodel Dossou, who both scored in their 2-1 win over Nigeria, and 26-year-old goalkeeper Marcel Dandjinou, who was in goal when the two sides last met.

On the list of invitees are Burnley striker Andreas Hountondji, Lagos-born Lorient forward Tosin Aiyegun, France-based Junior Olaitan, combative midfielder Sessi d’Almeida, who plays with Cypriot side Apollon Limassol, and Lokomotiv Sofia striker Steve Traore, who has been recalled after having last played for Benin in November 2023.

The Cheetahs, drawn in Group D against Nigeria, Libya, and Rwanda, will play their first game of the qualifiers when they visit the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo to tackle the Super Eagles on Saturday, September 7.

Rohr’s side will then host Libya’s Mediterranean Knights three days later at the Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny in Abidjan.
