AFCON 2025 Qualifiers: Axel Tuanzebe out of DR Congo squad due to freak hand injury

Ipswich Town defender Axel Tuanzebe will miss DR Congo’s upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers double-header against Tanzania due to a freak injury he suffered last week, Afrosport reports.

The 26-year-old Manchester United Academy graduate reportedly sustained a terrible hand injury while washing the dishes, and is expected to be out for at least a month.

Tuanzebe suffered a deep cut to his thumb from a broken glass while he was doing the dishes with reports suggesting he almost lost his finger due to the severity of the wound.

The DR Congo international, who had started all of Ipswich’s previous six matches in the Premier League this season, was absent from their 4-1 defeat to West Ham on Saturday.

After the defeat at the London Stadium, Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna said that Tuanzebe’s injury was a “very unfortunate accident”.

“He’s naturally a miss with the way he’s started the season. He’s going to be out for a little while,” McKenna added.

According to reports, the accident happened at his home and the defender has undergone successful surgery.

DR Congo will face Tanzania’s Taifa Stars in the first leg on Thursday, October 10, at the Stade des Martyrs in Kinshasa, before heading to Dar es Salaam for the return fixture at the Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium on Tuesday, October 15.
