AFCON 2025: Ndidi takes the armband as new Super Eagles captain

AFCON 2023: Injury blow for Nigeria as Alhassan Yusuf replaces Ndidi

Wilfred Ndidi has been named the new captain of the Super Eagles following the retirements of Ahmed Musa and William Troost-Ekong, Afrosport reports.

The midfielder has previously served as stand-in captain on several occasions and has now been officially entrusted with the armband.

Speaking on his new role, Ndidi said: “It’s a huge responsibility, and with the help of the players, everything will go smoothly.”

Ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations and Nigeria’s goal at the tournament, the Besiktas star added: “I have had conversations with the players, trying to make them understand the reason why we are here. We also need support from the staff and to have conversations about what’s ahead. It is very important that everyone is on the same page.”

Ndidi also had kind words for his predecessor Troost-Ekong, hailing his leadership and influence during his time with the team.

“He is a great leader, he speaks for the team, he stands for the team. I admire him a lot,” he said. “How outspoken he is. He is one person everyone looks up to. He is an amazing guy. I have learnt a lot from him. We spoke a couple of weeks ago, still chipped in some advice, i feel he is still part of the team. He is going to be missed.”

Ndidi made his Super Eagles debut in October 2015 and has earned over 70 caps. He has represented Nigeria at two AFCON tournaments and one World Cup.

The former Leicester City man will lead the Eagles out in Morocco, with Nigeria drawn in Group C alongside Tanzania, Tunisia and Uganda.

Eric Chelle’s side will kick off their campaign against Tanzania on Tuesday, 23 December before facing Tunisia on December 27 and Uganda in their final group game three days later.
