AFCON 2025: Dominant Nigeria cruise past Mozambique to reach quarter-final

AFCON 2025: Lookman fires Super Eagles past Tanzania in Group C opener

Nigeria booked their place in the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in emphatic fashion, thrashing Mozambique 4-0 in Fes on Monday, Afrosport reports.

The Super Eagles asserted their dominance from the opening whistle, with Victor Osimhen seeing an early effort ruled out for offside inside the first two minutes. Nigeria’s intensity soon paid off in the 20th minute when Ademola Lookman bent a superb finish into the corner after being picked out by Akor Adams.

The lead was doubled just five minutes later. Alex Iwobi drove through midfield before releasing Lookman, whose low cross, taking a slight deflection off Adams, was turned home by Osimhen from close range.

Mozambique, appearing in the AFCON  knockout stages for the first time, found themselves overwhelmed by Nigeria’s pace and movement, offering little resistance or attacking threat.

Osimhen struck again shortly after the restart to make it 3-0, meeting Lookman’s clever delivery from the left at the back post to claim his second goal of the match.

Adams then rounded off an impressive individual performance in the 75th minute, powering in Nigeria’s fourth following more incisive play from Lookman.

Nigeria could have added further goals as they cruised through, and will now turn their attention to Saturday’s quarter-final clash in Marrakech, where they will face either Algeria or DR Congo.
