AFCON 2025: Burkina Faso come from behind to beat 10-man Equatorial Guinea

Burkina Faso came from a goal down to defeat 10-man Equatorial Guinea 2-1 in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations Group E opener in Casablanca. Afrosport reports.

The Stallions are one of the strongest sides in the tournament with three semi-final appearances in their four previous outings, including a runners-up finish in 2013. The National Thunder also had a decent run since their debut in 2012, with two quarter-final finishes and a fourth-place finish as hosts in 2015.

After a goalless first half at Stade Mohamed V, things went wrong for the Equatorial Guineans after Basilio Ndong was shown a straight red for a dangerous foul in the 50th minute.

Burkina Faso wasted a number of chances and had an effort by Lassina Traore ruled by VAR for offside. Despite being a man down, Equatorial Guinea took the lead courtesy of Marvin Anieboh in the 85th minute.

The Burkinabe were however able to respond in added time, Georgi Minoungou levelling in the 95th minute before Bayer Leverkusen defender Edmond Tapsoba scored the winner three minutes later.

The West Africans will next face Algeria, while Equatorial Guinea will be up against Sudan.
