AFCON 2025: Algeria to face Nigeria in quarter-finals after round of 16 win

Algeria will face the Super Eagles of Nigeria in the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after a 1-0 extra time win over DR Congo in the round of 16 on Tuesday, Afrosport reports.

The Desert Foxes were one of the just two teams to finish the group stage with a 100% record alongside Nigeria, topping Group E ahead of Burkina Faso, Sudan and Equatorial Guinea.

The first half in Rabat failed to produce any spark with just one shot on target from the Congolese. Algeria however upped their ante in the second half, producing seven total shots of which three were on target.

The only thing missing was a goal which failed to come in 90 minutes. The game went into extra time and just when it seemed a penalty shootout was next to determine the winner, the deadlock was finally broken in the 119th minute when substitute Adil Boulbina drifted down the left flank and blasted a fierce shot into the far corner of the net.

The North African giants will tackle Nigeria at Stade de Marrakech on Saturday, a rematch of the 2019 AFCON semi-final which they won and ultimately lifted the title by defeating Senegal in the final.
