AFCON 2023 Qualifiers: Why NPFL stars were exempted from Super Eagles training

Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro rested Rivers United defender Ebube Duru and Bendel Insurance midfielder Divine Nwachukwu in his first training session for Sunday’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Sierra Leone.

The two players were dropped to recover on Monday after participating in the just-concluded NPFL Super 6 play-offs in Lagos with Peseiro running the rule over 19 players in training at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan.

However, the two NPFL goalkeepers in the selection – Ojo Olorunleke of Enyimba and Victor Sochima were involved in Monday’s session.

The Super Eagles will continue preparing for the crucial AFCON qualifier on Tuesday with Napoli’s Victor Osimhen among the two players yet to report to camp.

Nigeria currently sit atop Group A with nine points from four games and will face the Leone Stars who are third in the group, at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in Monrovia.
