AFCON 2023 Qualifiers: Aubameyang returns to Gabon squad for DR Congo game

Chelsea star Aubameyang makes Gabon U-turn after meeting president

Chelsea striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Mario Lemina have been summoned for Gabon’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying game against Democratic Republic of Congo on June 18.

Aubameyang and Lemina returned to Patrice Neveu’s selection after announcing their retirement from international football in 2022.

The duo withdrew from the Panthers’ squad at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon last year due to health issues, and later announced their retirement on social media.

Aubameyang recently rescinded his decision after meeting the President of Gabon, Ali Bongo in the UK and Neveu is ready to count on the Premier League stars for a crucial fixture that could confirm the country’s qualification for next year’s AFCON in Ivory Coast.

Gabon currently lead Group I with seven points from four matches and they are followed closely by Sudan who have six points from the same number of matches.

DR Congo sit at the bottom with four points, a point behind third-placed Mauritania.
