AFCON 2023: Morocco’s Mazraoui out for six weeks with injury

Moroccan fullback Noussair Mazraoui is set for a spell on the sidelines after picking up a calf injury while on duty for Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

The 26-year-old, who started the Bavarians 1-0 win against Manchester United on Tuesday, is expected to be out for at least six weeks, and he is set to miss the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations in January 2024.

The former Ajax defender was substituted at halftime, with Austrian midfielder Konrad Laimer taking his place as they booted United out of Europe.

According to Bayern’s official report, which was released on Wednesday after tests carried out by club doctors, Mazraoui has a muscle bundle tear in his left thigh.

Bayern have two Bundesliga matches coming up before the winter break, and they will be hosting third-placed VfB Stuttgart on Sunday before taking a trip to the Volkswagen Arena to face Wolfsburg next Wednesday.

Thomas Tuchel’s men sit four points behind Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen but have a game in hand.
