AFCON 2023 Qualifiers: Ghana’s Hughton admits uphill task after Madagascar draw

The Ghana Football Association have revealed the pre-tournament schedule of the Black Stars ahead of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in the Ivory Coast next month.

The West African giants will be gunning for a fifth continental title and first in 42 years, beginning with a 10-day training camp in Johannesburg that commences on December 31.

Within that period, Ghana will play a friendly with Botswana and then jet off to their neighbours for the tournament proper.


“The Black Stars will assemble in Johannesburg, South Africa on Sunday, December 31, 2023 to begin preparations for next month’s TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations Cote D’Iviore 2023,” read a statement on the GFA website.

“The team will spend approximately, ten days in South Africa in readiness for Africa’s flagship competition slated for Cote D’Ivoire from Saturday, January 13 – Sunday, February 11, 2024.

“Ghana will play one friendly match against Botswana in Johannesburg on Monday, January 8, 2024 before flying to Abidjan two days later for the tournament.”

Ghana have been paired in Group B alongside side record AFCON champions Egypt as well as Lusophone sides Cape Verde and Mozambique. They will begin their campaign against the Cape Vardeans on January 14 in Abidjan.
