AFCON 2023: Ghana coach Hughton sacked after poor Ivory Coast outing

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) have relieved Chris Hughton of his duty as the manager of the Ghana national team after a poor outing at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations where they failed to make it out of the group stage.

The Black Stars were hoping to mount a serious challenge for a fifth AFCON title and first since 1982 but it did not go according to plan as they were beaten by Cape Verde in Group B and drew their other games against Egypt and Mozambique.

They ultimately finished in third place but their two points was not enough for them to qualify as one of the four best losers.

The GFA also dissolved the technical team that worked under the former Newcastle United boss.

“The Ghana Football Association wishes to announce that Chris Hughton has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the senior National team with immediate effect,” read a statement on the GFA website.

“The Executive Council has also taken a decision to dissolve the technical team of the Black Stars.

“The Ghana Football Association will in the coming days provide a roadmap on the future direction of the Black Stars.”

Hughton was first appointed as a technical director for the Black Stars ahead of their 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying playoff against Nigeria which they won on away goals and booked a berth at the mundial in Qatar where they failed to make it out of a group containing Portugal, South Korea and Uruguay.

The 56-year-old Irish man who is of Ghanaian descent, was appointed as head coach in February 2023 and saw them through the 2023 AFCON qualifiers and the first two round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
