AFCON 2023 Exclusive: Ex-Ghana goalkeeper Dauda laments defeat to Cape Verde

Former Black Stars goalkeeper Fatau Dauda has expressed disappointment after Ghana started their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a 2-1 loss to Cape Verde.

Garry Rodrigues’ 92nd-minute winning goal broke Ghanaians’ hearts as they failed to end their winless run at the AFCON since 2019.

The Black Stars’ last AFCON victory dates back to June 2019 when they defeated Guinea-Bissau 2-0 in a group stage fixture but Dauda believes Chris Hughton’s team are capable of turning their fortune around when they face Egypt on Thursday.

“You know it’s very disappointing, it’s very unfortunate they went to the tournament with high hopes but you know of course different people are coming for the AFCON,” Dauda told Afrosport.

“Ghana has a very young squad but it was very unfortunate yesterday that they lost their first game.

“If the team does not have a good character and they are not calm, things could be worse but I know they have a good tactical team that can talk to them and arrange things well so that they can have a good game which will not be easy against Egypt so best wishes to Ghana.”

The Black Stars sit at the bottom of Group C after the defeat while Cape Verde sit atop with three points with Egypt and Mozambique sharing a point each.
