Former Nigeria goalkeeper Dosu Joseph believes the Super Eagles can go all the way to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations if they avoid conceding goals.
Jose Peseiro’s side will begin the charge for their first AFCON title since 2013 when they lock horns with Equatorial Guinea on Sunday.
The Super Eagles boasts of the best attack during the 2023 AFCON qualifiers with a total of 22 goals scored in six games, but the goalkeeping department has been a worry for Peseiro and football enthusiasts.
First-choice goalkeeper Francis Uzoho has come under scrutiny due to his inconsistent display while South Africa-based Stanley Nwabali joins Enyimba’s Ojo Olorunleke as the two reserve goalkeepers.
Joseph who was part of the Atlanta 1996 Olympics winning team, said Nigeria have all it takes to be champions in Ivory Coast but they must be united on the field.
He told Afrosport: “We have seen all the goalkeepers in the team except Nwabali from the South African League. I know him very well when he was still in the Nigerian league but I have not watched him since he moved to South Africa.
“Whoever the coach picks to play in that position knows how important the role is. The goalkeeping area is the most important part of the team, I think if we do not concede goals we will be able to do well. If the team unites and play together, Nigeria will succeed.”
Sunday’s match will be the first encounter between Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea but the Super Eagles are the more dominant side in their previous two meetings during the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
The West Africans won both legs of the qualifiers by 1-0 and 2-0.
