Equatorial Guinea coach Juan Micha has shifted focus to steering his team to the round of 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations after their 1-1 draw against Nigeria on Sunday.
The National Thunder, for the first time in a match against Nigeria, avoided defeat and they shared the spoils at the Olympic Stadium of Ebimpe.
Ivan Salvador gave Equatorial Guinea the lead in the 36th minute but they were pegged back by Victor Osimhen’s equaliser.
Equatorial Guinea are now eyeing a place in the knockout round as they aim to better their quarter-final exit in the 2021 AFCON that took place in Cameroon two years ago.
Micha said after the game: “I think this selection that I lead is prepared day by day to compete in this tournament… I am lucky to know the details of football having been a high-level player.
“Our mission is not complete, we still have a lot to do. We are in a group stage, this is the first match. We will try to reach the next stage before seeing what happens next.”
Equatorial Guinea will have a chance to boost their qualification hopes when they face Guinea-Bissau in their second Group A fixture on Thursday, January 18.
Guinea-Bissau sit bottom of the group after conceding a 2-0 loss to host nation Ivory Coast in the opening match on Saturday.
