AFCON 2023: Egypt record second consecutive draw in Ghana clash

Egypt recorded their second consecutive 2-2 draw in Group B of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, this time against Ghana in Abidjan on Thursday night.

The Pharaohs recorded that scoreline in their opener against Mozambique and in similar fashion, fell behind in added time of the first half when West Ham United star Mohammed Kudus fired home a powerful shot from distance shortly after Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah had to be taken off due to injury.

Egypt thought they had equalised in the 51st minute courtesy of Mohamed Abdelmonem but it was disallowed for offside.

Their moment finally came in the 69th minute when Omar Marmoush rounded off goalkeeper Richard Ofori and finished off with ease after a poor back pass from Inaki Williams. Kudus completely his brace moments later as his effort took a deflection off Abdelmonem.

Egypt had the final say in the 74th minute when a defensive error by substitute Osman Bukari allowed Trezeguet to feed Mostafa Mohamed and finish the rest.

The result leaves Ghana and Egypt’s qualification hopes hanging in the balance with Cape Verde up against fellow Lusophone nation Mozambique on Friday.
