AFCON 2023: Cameroon striker Toko Ekambi retires from international duty

Cameroon star Karl Toko Ekambi has called time on his international career after their exit from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Toko Ekambi played in all but one of the Indomitable Lions’ games in Ivory Coast and he had a goal to his name as they failed to go beyond the round of 16.

He scored the opening goal for Cameroon in their 3-2 win against the Gambia that secured their progress from Group C as runners-up.

President of the Cameroonian FA (FECAFOOT), Samuel Eto’o confirmed Toko Ekambi’s retirement with an appreciation note on social media.

Eto’o wrote: “You decided to retire at the age of 31 after giving everything for the most beautiful country in the world.

“Thank you for letting us dream, thank you for your leadership. Thank you for mentoring the young ones, thank you for helping the coach build a group beyond individuals.”

Toko Ekambi made his debut appearance for Cameroon in a friendly match against Burkina Faso in June 2015 and he was part of the squad that won the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations trophy and bronze at the 2021 edition on home soil.

The 31-year-old will now turn attention to his club career after completing a late move from Saudi club Abha to rivals and Steven Gerrard’s team, Al-Ettifaq.
