AFCON 2023: Ambrose knocks Super Eagles for lack of togetherness

AFCON 2023: Super Eagles hold Equatorial Guinea to draw in Group A opener

2013 Africa Cup of Nations winner Efe Ambrose said Nigeria players are yet to gel together as a team after their 1-1 draw with Equatorial Guinea on Sunday.

Jose Peseiro’s team are hunting to clinch Nigeria’s fourth AFCON title in Ivory Coast but Sunday’s result has raised questions over the team’s quality.

Stanley Nwabali and Alhassan Yusuf were the two players who made their Super Eagles debut in the 1-1 draw in Abidjan.

The former Celtic and Hibernian defender suggested that the Peseiro’s men should focus on the team goal and not individual success.

“You have to play first as a team – it is not about individuals,” Ambrose told BBC Sport. “I think that is what we are lacking right now – that team, that togetherness.

“I don’t think that it’s not there, but it is not up to where it should be. Individuals will have the talent, they have everything but it is about how to assemble the right players with quality together, to work together as one.”

Ambrose who spent the majority of his club career in Scotland, played a crucial part in Nigeria’s success in South Africa a decade ago and he made five appearances for Stephen Keshi’s team in that tournament.
