Following weeks of speculation, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) as title owner and New World Television (NWTV) as exclusive Pay-Per-View and Free-to-Air (FTA) license holder have both confirmed that the 34th Edition of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Nations Cup 2023 Cote d’Ivoire will be available to Nigerian viewers in its entirety, courtesy of Afrosport and its network of Free-to-Air channels across Nigeria.
AFCON 2023 is a highly-anticipated sport spectacle that will take place in Ivory Coast from January 13 till February 11, and will be available on Afrosport TV alongside NTA, AIT amongst a network of Free-to-Air channels across Nigeria.
Afrosport will be the FTA rightsholder and will distribute through NTA, the national broadcaster, and through its Afrosport FTA affiliate network partners, including TVC, AIT, STV, Wazobia TV, and Wazobia Max.
In addition, Afrosport has been awarded with a Pay TV license for the Pay-per-View TV rights, with the exclusive authority to licence Pay TV broadcaster, Supersport.
Afrosport’s Chief Consultant, Rotimi Pedro making the announcement said, “This news has been eagerly awaited, and can put Nigerian fans at ease that they will be able to enjoy unprecedented coverage of the AFCON this coming January.”
Pedro added that the sublicensing to Supersport is still being discussed and not yet concluded.
Speaking on the backdrop of this agreement, Mr. Nimonka Kolani, NWTV’s Managing Director insists “By securing the rights to AFCON 2023, Afrosport assures Nigerians that they would not miss any major football events in Africa in 2024. CAF, under the leadership of Dr Patrice Motsepe, enabled this partnership between NWTV and Afrosport, and it should last to the delight of football fans in Nigeria.”
The AFCON will take place in Ivory Coast, originally scheduled for June 2023, kicks-off on Saturday, January 13 with the opening game between the hosts and Guinea-Bissau.
The Super Eagles of Nigeria commences its campaign on Sunday, January 14 against Equatorial Guinea, in Abidjan.
Pedro emphasised that Afrosport’s guiding principle is the promotion of sports freedom. In addition to over 30 Free-to-Air Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria (BON) television and radio member stations, the live matches can also be enjoyed on Afrosport TV, Channel 730 on the Free TV platform, and free streams on its VIDIVU OTT platform.
