FIFA have honoured Cameroon legend Roger Milla in Qatar for being the oldest goalscorer in the World Cup history.
Milla who recently turned 70, received the honorary award before the Group G opening match between Cameroon and Switzerland at the Al Janoub Stadium on Thursday
The former Montpellier and Monaco striker was celebrated as the oldest ever goal scorer in the history of the World Cup at 42 years and 39 days old – breaking the record he set four years earlier at 38 years old at Italia ’90.
The former African Footballer of the Year was one of the stars of the Italia 1990 tournament, scoring four goals to help Cameroon become the first African nation to progress to the quarter-finals of the World Cup.
At the age of 38, Milla etched his memories in the hearts of many football fans around the world with his dancing celebration around the corner flag every time he hit the back of the net.
Four years later, Milla scored Cameroon’s only goal in an embarrassing 6-1 defeat to Russia at the USA 1994 World Cup but the Indomitable Lions crashed out of the group stage.
He is also the third oldest player to play at the World Cup – behind Egypt’s Essam El-Hadary (45 years, 161 days).
Milla played his final game for Cameroon in a friendly against South Africa in December 1994, in a career that spanned 21 years, scoring 43 goals in 77 international appearances.
