CAF Women’s Champions League: Bayelsa Queens target success for Nigeria

Bayelsa Queens star Mercy Evawere Itimi said they are focused on bringing glory to Nigeria by winning the 2022 CAF Women’s Champions League in Morocco.

Itimi produced a stellar performance by scoring a second-half brace for the Nigerian Women’s Football League champions in their 3-0 thrashing of Egyptian club Wadi Degla in their last group match on Sunday.

The victory secured Bayelsa Queens’ passage to the semi-final where they will face host team AS FAR, and the youngster, who was named the Woman of the Match, aims to help the Prosperity Girls lift the title for the first time after Mamelodi Sundowns won the maiden edition last year.

“We want to bring the cup (CAF Women’s Champions League) to Nigeria,” Itimi told CAF website. “To win this tournament and surf on the good results that Nigerian football is currently accumulating.”

The 16-year-old who plays for the Nigeria U-20 women’s national team, also cautioned her teammates to be alert and be ready for a fierce battle in Marrakech on Wednesday.

She added: “We must remain very vigilant. We have the advantage of knowing the identity of our next opponent (AS Far), it is a great team, but Bayelsa Queens are also a great team. It’s going to be a great battle.”
