Rivers United are aiming to beat defending champions Wydad Casablanca to reach the CAF Champions League group stage and pocket home $40,000 each.
Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike promised to double the $20,000 reward he gave the team for winning the Nigeria Professional Football League last campaign if they progress to the next round of the elite club competition on the continent.
The Pride of Rivers scaled the preliminary hurdle by beating Liberia champions Watanga SC 3-1 on aggregate, thanks to goals Kenechukwu Agu, Chidiebube Duru and Paul Acquah that gave them a 3-0 lead in the first-leg.
At the team’s reception he hosted in the Government House in Port Harcourt back in July, Wike said: “Each of you will go home with $20,000. For me, you deserve more than that, but because of the economy. If not, you deserve more than this. You have done well, and let me tell you if you qualify in the group stage of this CAF competition, we will double it for you.”
Wydad Casablanca won the 2021-22 CAF Champions League after beating Al Ahly 2-0 in the final that took place in May.
